‘Pasanga' steals show at Vijay awards

'Pasanga' bagged the most number of awards at the fourth UniverCell Vijay Awards 2009 function at a  star-studded gathering here on Saturday. It won five awards in different categories, providing a jubilant moment for the entire team that went on stage to receive the ‘Best Crew' award. Child artists Kishore and Sriram enacted an action scene from the movie to a resounding applause from the full house at Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Stadium. They received the ‘Best Child Artiste' award for their performance in the film.

While director Pandiraj won the ‘Best Find of the Year' for ‘Pasanga,' actor Vimal got the ‘Best Newcomer' (male) award from Member of Parliament Kanimozhi. Jayaprakash was declared the ‘Best Supporting Actor' (male) for the same movie. The speech and hearing impaired actor Abinaya received a standing ovation for her performance in ‘Nadodigal.' She bagged the ‘Best Supporting Actor' (female) award. Favourite category awards chosen by Vijay TV viewers were presented under five categories. Actors Vijay and Anushka won the Favourite Hero and Favourite Heroine awards for their performance in ‘Vettaikaran.' ‘Ayan' starred by Suriya was chosen as Favourite Film and the Favourite Song of the Year 2009 went to ‘Oru Chinnathamarai.' Director Samuthrakani received the Favourite Director Award. Among the 27 categories chosen by jury members, actors Prakashraj and Pooja won the Best Actor and Best Actress awards for films ‘Kancheevaram' and ‘Naan Kadavul' respectively.

Bala bagged the Best Director award for ‘Naan Kadavul'. ‘Nadodigal' was chosen as the best film of 2009. Receiving the Best Music Director award, Harris Jayaraj said he was elated to win the Vijay Award for the fourth time since its inception. Actor Suriya was chosen as the best entertainer of the year. While Santhanam was chosen as Best Comedian for Siva Manasula Sakthi, Rajendran got Best Villain award for ‘Naan Kadavul.' Information Minister Parithi Ellamvazhuthi spoke. The colourful ceremony was interspersed with scintillating dance and music performances, including those of playback singer Karthik, music director Vijay Antony and actor Sneha.
