TRAI sets tariff for cable TV in non-Cas areas

Soon after being appointed as Trai chairman, JS Sarma has taken up the issue of fixing tariff for cable TV services in non-Cas areas. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will be meeting stakeholders of the broadcasting sector to get their views before coming out with a consultation paper. Trai will also be holding meetings with all DTH operators and IPTV service providers, registered consumer advocacy groups (CAGs), broadcasters of pay/FTA channels, and multi-system operators (MSOs) and local cable operators (LCOs) for this purpose. The move has come in the wake of the Supreme Court order, dated 13 May, which has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to look into the issue. Trai has also been asked to consider the feasibility of putting a cap on carriage and placement charges.

TRAI toward cable TV tariff fixing

Moving in the direction of fixing tariff for cable TV services, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) will shortly seek public opinion from all concerned, including viewers and consumer advocacy groups in the country as part of its pre-consultation process. Informing this at the second south-zone regional workshop on capacity building of consumer advocacy groups in Mysore, TRAI member R N Prabhakar said, “We are going to decide on a major issue relating to fixing tariff for cable TV services. As this involves complicated issues, TRAI would seek public opinion by issuing a questionnaire, which will be posted in its website also.”

The questionnaire would cover issues like whether wholesale, retail prices of TV channels should be fixed. If yes, the ceiling to be prescribed. Alternatively, should it be left under forbearance, that is, market forces. This would cover all the players in the TV cable services, broadcasters, multi-system operators who supply TV channels, and cable operators.
If under forbearance, then how the interests of consumers, cable operators and broadcasters is to be protected. If retail prices are to be fixed with or without ceiling, should it be uniform for the whole country or on a different yardstick and consumer affordability. While telecom services began with regulations, broadcasting services were not so and hence a number of basic issues are involved in cable TV services, Prabhakar pointed out. Calling upon consumer groups to work with TRAI in ensuring quality service in telecom and broadcasting services at a lower and affordable rate, he said the country was on par with developed countries in technology adoption. However, the issue was how to make the consumers aware of the changing phase of technology for using it effectively.

He explained to the consumer advocacy groups, network operators and telecom officials present on TRAI steps to improve the telecom services in the country, fundamental being telecom tariff. Referring to the three-phase consumer redressal mechanism, a TRAI survey revealed that the call- centre arrangement had started working reasonably well. However, awareness of the next two stages of complaint redressal - nodal officers and appellate authority was “very low”. He wondered why customers were not approaching the second and third stages, whether it was due to lack of awareness. Prabhakar called upon the service providers to assess the number and nature of complaints received by the call centres and inform the TRAI. He lamented that the regulation relating to unsolicited calls was not very successful. “Some people are hoodwinking these regulations. Therefore, suggestions are needed in this area too.”

Secretary Ravindra Nath Guru and Gopal Rao of Consumer Care Society, which had arranged the workshop, Muralidharan of CREAT, Bhamy V Shenoy of Mysore Grahaka Parishat, S P Thirumala Rao of Mysore Consumer Forum and consumer activists from southern states offered suggestions to improve telecom and broadcasting services. Service providers explained steps taken to implement TRAI orders, consumer education etc.

Ravi's Thank you message

Hi guys, I happened to see this thank you message from Ravi, 2nd of Aritel Super Singer 2008 and I liked this message and want to share with you ppl.. also find his personal id in here...

First of all, I am sorry that I could not express my thanks to all of you on the day of my live performance through the live show which I was hoping for but could not happen unfortunately. Also, I could not come out with my message immediately due to the sad demise of my grandma who had brief illness for about two weeks which was causing worry to all of us in our family.

It is true that like any other contestant, I would have felt happy, had I won the title. But, to be frank with you all, I feel so happy now to see all your affection and love. Many people called me and were so emotional while speaking to me. My father, being one of the regular readers of the posts in this forum and other forums, I was always briefed about the comments, both positive and negative, which have helped me to put in more hardwork and to live upto the expectations of the musiclovers worldwide to the maximum extent possible. I was so moved to see that so many viewers had not only expressed their happiness about my singing and were considering me very close to their heart as one of their family members and were become so upset than me when I could not win the title.

Neither winning nor losing will make any impact in my passion towards music. I will always try to learn good music in any form and will improve myself to give my best whenever there is an opportunity.

This journey to me was a beautiful learning experience and I thoroughly enjoyed each and every moment in the sets along with other participants. It’s only because of Super Singer I got so many well wishers and friends who really appreciate from their hearts and am so fortunate enough to get their wishes. Also, I could explore myself into singing of western, rap, unplugged renditions, little creative medley songs, etc. Thanks to Vijay TV and Super Singer for making this happen.

My sincere thanks to all the Judges who were always encouraging and the other Chief Guests, the legendary singers who sang with us, the Voice Trainer, Mr.Ananth Vaidyanathan, the Executive Producer, the Associate Producers and their Creative Team, the Anchors (Ms.Chinmayi, Ms.Malini and Mr.Yugendran), Technical Crew and my fellow contestants, the Orchestra members and all who were part of this competition.

Because of the overwhelming support from the music lovers all over the world (thanks to internet), I am planning to do some concerts to the likings of my wellwishers. Hope to get all your continued support for that too which will make me to be in constant touch with all of you. It is needless to say that Music is Divine and for me it is my life. I pray God to bless all of us to achieve our goals in our lives.

You may feel free to mail me your views, whenever you feel sending so, to my email id: ravi15.personal@gmail.com

I will also feel happy to share my developments and happiness with you, in future too through my mails.

I do wish to record my thanks to my family members and to all my School and College FRIENDS, Office colleagues for their continuous support in my career.

Once again Thanks and Cheers.

Ravi

Vijay Cinema..

Remember Vijay TV had kutti padam sometime back which had tamil films for just 1 hour.. the film was reduced to 1 hour by cutting down the unimportant scenes from the film. this was quite good initially but I am not sure whether this was really interesting to see that way always. during summer this was replaced by the summer fest for the kids which had hollywood and cartoon films dubbed in tamil and which had been a super hit always in Vijay TV.. we even saw other channels following similar pattern in summer this year. with the schools opened and kids are not in house anymore Vijay Cinema is back again in the channel. Vijay Cinema will have the full movie telecasted in the afternoon and more to it is every week they have got any celebrity special and last week it was Bhagyaraj special and whole of the week had Bhagyaraj's super hit films in the channel..

Blooper Special..

This week there will be a chance in Airtel Super Singer 2008.. it will not be a repeat of the grand final show again. I guess this will be the last week for Airtel Super Singer 2008 and from next week the next edition of the junior, Airtel Super Singer Junior 2 will start in the channel.. this week it would be bloopers special.. and looks like it will be really interesting to see the episodes.. especially from the promotional video, Mano's gestures which were not telecasted during the competition is now going to be out. it would be still more to come and definitely for a show which had run for more than a year time will have lot of bloopers.. in fact few other shows have their blooper scenes in every episode.. having that in mind imagine how much of bloopers will this have.. this itself might run for weeks ;).. enjoy the bloopers special of Airtel Super Singer 2008.. another good thing in this is we will see Chinmayi's episodes even :)
