Tamil GEC, Vijay TV abuzz with new launches

The Tamil general entertainment channel, Vijay TV from STAR Network is busy putting together new offerings to strengthen its weekday and weekend programming. The new launches come close on the heels of the channel airing its two tent pole properties -- Rajnikanth Baba Caves Story and Kamal Haasan's 50 years in Cinema Celebration.

In an email interaction with afaqs!, K Sriram, general manager, Vijay TV, shares, "Undoubtedly, Rajnikanth and Haasan are two icons of the film industry. The tent poles created around them were something that came the channel's way and we lapped it up. The Vijay TV team's visit to the Baba Caves, which Rajinikanth visits, and the celebration of Kamal Haasan's 50 years in cinema are easily the high points of our programming, helping us garner more eyeballs for the channel and providing us an ideal platform for the launch of our fiction shows."

The channel has just brought on-air two new fiction shows, Maharani and Kallikaatu Pallikoodam, airing Monday to Friday at 7 pm and 7:30 pm, respectively. Maharani -- the tale of two young orphans, Mahalakshmi and Rani -- captures the struggle of the two protagonists and the truth of relationships around us. Kallikaatu Pallikoodam is set against a village backdrop, and narrates the tale of aspiration of kids caught between two feuding, neighbouring villages.

These two serials will be followed by two more format shows on weekends. Vijay TV will launch the second season of its format show, Rin Anu Alavum Bayamillai on October 30. As was the case with the first daredevil show, this time too, seven small-screen actresses, namely Neelima Rani, Tinky, Mahalakshmi, Priyadarshini, Preetha, Vandhana and Sneha Nambiyar will face new and innovative tasks. It is being hosted by actress, Lakshmi Rai. The show will air every Friday and Saturday at 8 pm. Work is in progress for another format show, titled 'S&M Kids' Wear Kalakapovadhu Yaaru Juniors'. The stand-up comedy show, for kids in the age-group of 5-15 years, is scheduled to air at Sundays at 7 pm. Sriram points out that the channel is bringing in format shows on weekends because, by nature, they cater to families; and weekends provide an ideal environment for all the members to tune into format shows.
