Soon after being appointed as Trai chairman, JS Sarma has taken up the issue of fixing tariff for cable TV services in non-Cas areas. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will be meeting stakeholders of the broadcasting sector to get their views before coming out with a consultation paper. Trai will also be holding meetings with all DTH operators and IPTV service providers, registered consumer advocacy groups (CAGs), broadcasters of pay/FTA channels, and multi-system operators (MSOs) and local cable operators (LCOs) for this purpose. The move has come in the wake of the Supreme Court order, dated 13 May, which has asked the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India to look into the issue. Trai has also been asked to consider the feasibility of putting a cap on carriage and placement charges.
