Kadhai alla nijam unites family

Kadhai alla nijam, the first reality show on Tamil television, anchored exceptionally well and realistically by actress Lakshmi is already into its second edition and has created ripples among the audience. This week an interesting re-union of a family after 45 years has taken place on Kadhai alla nijam show. Dr. Raju, an Acupuncture specialist was invited earlier to Kadhai alla nijam as a special guest. He had shared a grieving story about his life with the crew members of Kadhai alla nijam. Dr. Raju had lived with his father all his life. At the time of his dad’s death, his dad had spilled the beans on the existence of Raju’s mother and his siblings.

Till then, Raju was not aware of their existence. He was shocked and equally surprised to know that his dad had kept this truth from him. Dr. Raju has tried to go in search of his missing family, his mother, elder brother and sister. But his search had always ended up in vain. Kadhai alla nijam crew took up this case as a challenge and with the information provided by Dr. Raju, the crew has found the missing family members. His mother and sister were found at Cochin and his elder brother was found in Chennai.

The crew decided to invite Dr. Raju to the sets of Kadhai alla nijam as a special guest; but had also invited all his family members. It was a huge surprise for Dr. Raju and he was speechless when he saw his family members. Words felt too short after the re-union of Dr. Raju’s family. Tune into to Vijay TV’s Kadhai alla nijam on Wednesday, May 05, 2010 at 12 noon to watch this special bonding after 45 years.

DTH players gear up to join high-definition bandwagon

With the government promising to telecast the Commonwealth Games in high-definition (HD) format, Direct-to-Home (DTH) service providers like Dish TV, Reliance BIG and Airtel Digital are now gearing up to join the bandwagon over the next couple of months. High-definition television (HDTV) refers to videos with higher resolution than traditional TV, resulting in sharper pictures and richer colours. Though the market for HD services is restricted to niche segments at present (with Sun Direct being the only operator in the sector), industry experts are seeing increasing potential for such services in the coming year.

Dish TV plans to introduce HD services in June this year, while Reliance is evaluating market conditions to launch the service in a couple of weeks. Bharti Airtel executives inform work has reached an advanced stage in upgrading the infrastructure for HD services. An Airtel spokesperson said: “We initially launched our service in standard definition but we will soon make our content available on the HD platform. We believe the Commonwealth Games will trigger the HD revolution in India, just as the Asian Games drove in the colour TV revolution in 1982. We expect HD technology to lead the DTH industry growth story in the country.”

Salil Kapoor, chief operating officer, Dish TV, concurs: “HD services are particularly preferred for sports and movie content. With this year being choc-a-bloc with sporting events, such as the IPL, T20 World Cup, FIFA World Cup and CWG, we hope to see an increasing number of subscribers tuning into the HD segment.” Reliance, for instance, expects 10-15 per cent of the 1.5 million subscribers it hopes to add this year in the HD segment. In order to hook consumers into the segment, Reliance is coming out with an in-built Digital Video Recorder (DVR) with its HD set-top boxes.

Umesh Rao, chief marketing officer, Reliance BIG TV, while declining to specify the pricing point for the product, said: “What is unique about our HD set-top box is that it will enable the subscriber to receive HD feed and record content from a single set-top box. The pricing will not be off the line with what other players are currently offering.”

Rasigan Express launched

Vijay TV on Friday launched ‘Rasigan Express,' a bus that will tour across the State seeking votes for nominees of the fourth UniverCell Vijay Awards. The vehicle was flagged off by Information Minister Parithi Ellamvazhuthi from the city. The customised bus would provide people a platform to cast their votes in five categories — Favourite Hero, Heroine, Director, Film and Song in Tamil.

The colourfully decorated vehicle with images of popular actors would take fans down memory lane with photographs and video of award ceremonies held in the past three years. It would travel to 14 places in the State, including Chengalpet, Cuddalore, Vellore, Madurai and Karur, before culminating its journey in Kancheepuram on May 7. The organisers said nearly one lakh people voted last year. This time, people can choose their favourite film from 131 films released in 2009. A five-member jury comprising actor Radhika Sarathkumar, director A.R. Murugadoss, writer and director Yugi Sethu, cinematographer Ravi K.Chandran and cartoonist Madan would select the best technicians and actors for 32 categories.

Flagging off the bus, Mr. Ellamvazhuthi said this was the second time that he was participating in the event. Highlighting government initiatives, such as presentation of awards to film and television artists, he said such efforts by television channels to appreciate the film industry should continue for several decades. Tamil Film Producers Council president Rama Narayanan, film producer Udayanidhi Stalin, Film Employees Federation of South India president V.C. Guganathan and UniverCell founder D. Sathish Babu spoke.
