Rumours say Gautham Menon to do serial for Vijay TV

Some time back, it was reported in sections of the press that ace director Gautham Menon might be directing a television serial for a popular regional channel. The director’s willingness to work on a television serial is said to be his noble attempt to change the ‘style’ of serial-making and to make people view serials in a new light.

Television serials are mostly illogical and tearful sagas and Gautham Menon appears to be making attempts to change the mode of serial-making. The present genre of women-centric serials doesn’t appear to be concentrating on the script and the sequencing and dialogues more often than not tend to irritate the viewers.

Gautham Menon appears to be willing to make practical, story-based serials on the lines of those made by veteran K. Balachander some years back. Sources indicate that the serial Gautham Menon plans might be a thriller with each week witnessing a new episode.

Rumours are agog that Menon might also manage to rope in A.R Rahman, who has never scored music or songs for any serials, to score the music for his tele-serial. The only problem is that the producer might find it difficult to pay Gautham Menon and A.R Rahman’s fees which are likely to be on the higher side. Rumours further say that the serial is most likely to be aired on Vijay TV!

Vijay awards in trouble

Vijay awards in trouble

The Delhi High Court Friday allowed Vijay Television Private Limited to carry on its Vijay Awards 2011 ceremony, but asked the photocopy of the trophy image be presented before it to see how closely it resembles the Oscar trophy.

Justice G.P. Mittal was hearing a petition filed by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), which organises awards functions, including the world renowned Oscar awards ceremony in Hollywood.

The AMPAS alleged that the trophy presented at the Vijay awards for the Tamil film indistry organised by Vijay TV and Star India is substantially and deceptively similar to the Oscar trophy.

"The impugned statuette of Vijay TV violates the plaintiff's intellectual property right in the Oscar statuette," said the AMPAS.

The AMPAS submitted that it requested changes in the Vijay TV award trophy. The channel made two changes but declined a third change.

The court said: "It is going to have international ramification. The statuette must be produced before the court. I cannot pass the order without even seeing the statuette of both the parties."

However, the court did not ask Vijay TV not to hold the award ceremony. It has directed all the parties to appear before the mediation centre of the Delhi High Court July 4.

"Make settlement before the mediation centre about the changes to made in any of the trophies," said the court, adding that if that is not settled, then the matter will be heard July 13.

"On July 13, both the parties must produce the photocopy of the statuette that is being given during the award ceremony," said Justice Mittal.

The Vijay TV trophy shows a man holding a shield to the chest while the Oscar trophy has a sword held to the chest.

The AMPAS also submitted before the court that Vijay TV's sister concern, Star Movies, has the broadcast licence of the Oscar programme thereby increasing the possible confusion in the minds of the viewers.

The AMPAS has sought a damage of Rs.20 lakh be passed against Vijay TV and Star India.

Suseendhiran Snubs Mysskin in TV Show

In a TV show – the promos of which is repeatedly aired on Vijay TV – Director Suseendhiran unleashes his witty self on Mysskin. It is a talk show that features some of the best contemporary directors of Tamil cinema.

In a conversation amidst them, Mysskin talks about quality cinema and explains why people should watch quality movies. After Mysskin, Prabu Solomon talks about his raging hit Mynaa.

Mysskin says quite openly that he has not seen Mynaa. Immediately, Suseendhiran retorts, “How do you talk about watching quality movies, when you don’t watch them yourself?”

There could be an apt background music playing to exacerbate the feeling Mysskin would have undergone. Mysskin’s arrogance and vanity have come under excessive criticism including Simbu’s comments on his films that he has only a pair of legs acting in all his films.

A source in the film industry questions, “Is he an intellectual or a pseudo-intellectual?”

Star's first experiment to simulcast reality show on channels

For the first time on Indian television, a show is going to be common on Hindi and regional general entertainment channels.

Demonstrating its pan India power, Star India is launching its big ticket dance reality show, Just Dance, on three of its channels simultaneously and also on two channels down south.

Just Dance will hit the TV screens on 18 June and will be aired on Star Plus, Star One and Star Pravah (Marathi entertainment channel) at Saturday-Sunday 9 pm band.

The show will also have a deferred telecast on Asianet and Star Vijay in the afternoon slot.

Says Star India COO Sanjay Gupta, "With this bold move, Just Dance will transcend language and geography, and provide differentiated content for consumers. It will offer advertisers an unparalleled opportunity to maximise reach and unlock value. This is a significant initiative towards monetising the pan India power of the Star brand and showcasing its content on a platform larger than anyone else."

Several media buyers think of this simulcast as a "wise" and a "win-win" move for both Star and advertisers as Star is saving on production cost, getting more reach for the show and can charge a premium. The advertisers, on the other hand, are getting extra reach across languages and varied target groups.

A senior executive from a rival network is more cautious. “This is definitely a different move and something which is not tried in India before. But how much it will add to Star’s viewership remains to be seen. The same show on Star Plus and Star One doesn’t make any sense in my view.”

Gupta says it has selected the best of dance talent following a series of global auditions in cities from New York to Kolkata. "From over 30,000 participants, the channel zeroed down 52 contestants and finally 21 were shortlisted."

The show will see Hrithik Roshan, Farah Khan and Vaibhavi Merchant as the judges. Acclaimed choreographers have also been invited to contribute in training the contestants: Terence Lewis in Contemporary Dance, Saroj Khan in Indian, and Michelle Johnston in International Choreography.

Gupta points out that the show can only be made once, ruling out the chances of following seasons.

The winner of the show will be awarded Rs 10 million and a Swift car from Maruti Suzuki, apart from a dance video with Roshan.

Star has roped in Maruti Suzuki as the presenting sponsor while it is powered by Cadbury Bournvita.

The associate sponsors include Nokia, Parle hide & Seek, India Gate Basmati Rice, Kinder Joy, Adiction Deos, Alite, Pigeon, GNIIT, and Fair and Lovely Men. MTS is the mobile Internet partner, Red FM is radio partner. Fame is cinema partner, while Hindustan Times and Mid-Day are print partneres for the show.

Star India has also launched the marketing campaign for the show. The channel has created touch points for viewers with an “innovative and disruptive marketing campaign” that includes four music videos, digital initiatives and a unique “augmented reality” innovation, which allows viewers to dance with Roshan and share the same screen in Mumbai, Delhi and Lucknow malls.

“This type of marketing innovation has never been done before for any show on television – where the focus has been on selling a show – we have moved it to creating an experience,” says Gupta.

Gautham’s small screen plans stall?

There were news that Gautham Menon has plans to direct a serial. The director is working on this plan with the sole intention of changing the way how serials are viewed these days. The stigma attached to the serials now-a-days is that most of them are women-centric with loads of glycerin and the women a made up so well that even when they wake up from deep slumber not even a hair is astray!

Rewind to a couple of decades back when KB forayed in to small screen with his tele-serials. Looks like Gautham too is walking the same line. There were talks that he would be doing a thriller with each week seeing a new episode opening.

Yet another high point of this Gautham Menon offing is that the music will be by world famous A.R. Rahman. But it looks like this duo had some concerns regarding dishing a huge sum for serials. But with two pairs very experienced hands at work rest assured that the outcome whenever it is going to be would be great!

There were talks that Vijay TV will be telecasting the serial. But no official word has been out yet regarding the same. But when it comes we will be the first to let you know!
