Recognising icons of entertainment

Keeping in tune with the election season, most of the award winners at the first-ever Big Tamil Entertainment Awards, organised here on Saturday, said “each and every one of your votes mattered.”

The votes had nothing to do with upholding democracy, but had a lot to do with recognising those who entertain us all through the year by making us either laugh, shed a tear or smile.

The awards, instituted by BIG FM, covered four broad categories of entertainment - cinema, television, sports and the arts.

The award winners were an eclectic mix. Stalwarts such as Bharatnatyam exponent Padma Subrahmanyam shared the dais with upcoming actor Vidarth who won the 'Most entertaining newcomer' award for his role in ‘Myna'.

Silambarasan and Reema Sen won the most entertaining actor and actress of the year awards, respectively.

But it was ‘Boss Engira Bhaskaran' that almost swept the cinema category, winning awards for both best film and direction.

The film's producer K. Srinivasan said that though the movie's storyline could have been written “on the back of a bus ticket”, presentation and appeal matters a lot.

In the film music category, Yuvan Shankar Raja got the award for his score in ‘Paiyya', Na.Muthukumar got the best lyricist award and Chinmayi bagged the most entertaining playback singer award for her mellifluous rendition of ‘Poove poove'.

Awards were also given to the most entertaining television serial, ‘Thekkathi Ponnu' on Kalaignar TV, and talk show, ‘Neeya Naana' on Vijay TV.

But the biggest of them was reserved for the end with Rajnikanth receiving the ‘Entertainment phenomenon' award via a video link.

Dance troupe ‘Flyerz' peppered the awards ceremony with some feet-tapping numbers.
