Karthi’s ‘Siruthai’ easily won the Pongal race by fetching big collections in box office and indeed marked Karthi as A-League actor. Apart from the collections in box office, the film also won appreciations from critics and audiences for director Shiva’s style of changing the complete style from original version ‘Vikramakudu’. The latest news is that Vijay TV has acquired the satellite rights of ‘Siruthai’ and will air it shortly by next few weeks.

‘Siruthai’ is produced by K.E Gnanavel Raja of Studio Green Films and is directed by cinematographer-turned-filmmaker Shiva (Maker of Telugu blockbusters - ‘Shouryam’ and ‘Shankam’). Santhanam’s comedy tracks and Karthi’s outstanding performance in dual roles yielded best results for the film.

Grand Finale

Vijay TV a pioneer in introducing new concepts in television had launched an innovative show titled ‘Surf Excel - Little Big Film Makers’ during Feb 2011. Vijay TV gave an opportunity for the kids to tell a story by conducting a road show wherein hundreds of school children participated. Kids aged between 8 to 14 years had participated by writing a story that highlighted the concept "Dirt is good". This story writing competition was held in Madurai, Coimbatore and Chennai. Exciting and interesting stories were identified and shortlisted by the show judges, leading director A.R Murugadoss and actor Suhasini Maniratnam. The gratification for these enthusiastic children was seeing their story come to life.

Vijay TV has been airing this ‘Surf Excel - Little Big Film Makers’ every Sunday at 10 am. Kids with unique stories having enormous talent on story telling had been chosen by the judges. Each of the chosen stories were then made into short films; with the kid as the director under the able guidance of well established ad film makers like Roshini, Scorates, Balaji, Sendhil who helped them in the production of their films.

Sivakumar for Tamil New Year

The podium is familiar. So is the assemblage that comprises students, 6000 to be exact, and elders (around 1000). And all are in awe of the speaker on the dais! In a very short span Sivakumar has carved a niche for himself as an orator whose harangues are pregnant with skilled observations, analyses, research and conclusions. Referring to him as an actor could be obsolete because he has metamorphosed into a public speaker of merit.

Yet his histrionic potential enables him to have the edge over others. By now viewers of his talk shows on television and on stage are familiar with his remarkable memory and fluency. The subjects of Sivakumar’s speeches could be anything from the mundane to the exalted. But his approach is sincere, and style, inimitable.

The latest in this league was his address at Vellalar College of Women, Thindal, near Erode, titled ‘En Chellangalukku,’ which touched on poet Bharatiar’s works and their relevance in today’s scenario, significant health issues, and the family system as we find it now. The continuous two-hour refrain (He doesn’t pause even for a sip of water!) is to be telecast on April 14, 5 p.m., on Vijay TV.

“My job ends with the lecture. The credit of taking it to the channels and thereby to a much larger audience should go to friend Nagarajan of ‘Ramraj Cotton,’” he says. And the topics? “My Q and A column in the vernacular weekly Rani, for 76 weeks now, has helped me return to my past, glean useful info from my experiences and pass it on to readers. The response has been incredible. Also in my speeches at a couple of colleges recently, I mentioned health issues in passing and they were very well received. The result is this speech. My aim is to share worthy ideas with the young and old. Each message drives home a valid point,” he explains. Sivakumar is now working on the ‘Mahabharatham.’ “A mammoth task, by next year I should be ready,” he smiles.

The new-age work culture, thanks to the BPO set-up, and the fallout which is leading to major lifestyle changes, are tabled by a man who keeps a keen eye on the happenings around him, gets to the crux of problems and offers solutions too. This is just one of the many topics he dwells on.

In one of his earlier recordings, Sivakumar had spoken about the inhuman act of children packing parents off to age-old homes. “Studying the current situation I prefer to modify my stand,” he begins. Catch him on the channel this Wednesday to know his exact viewpoint.

“I’m not sermonising. Advice doesn’t go down well with people, I know. I’m just talking about the way I’ve lived life with values intact. Take it or leave it, but just give me a hearing before you decide either way,” he exhorts. And naturally the crowd is all ears!

Whats up with Little Big Film Makers

Unilever’s detergent brand Surf Excel has partnered with the Star Network’s Tamil offering to create a one hour television show–‘Surf Excel Little Big Film Makers’ (LBFM) that has helped the brand to engage with consumers in three cities in Tamil Nadu – Madurai, Coimbatore and Chennai. The initiative kicked off in early February this year.

Based on the brief by the sponsors, Vijay TV gave an opportunity to children between 8 and 14 years of age in the three cities to tell a story that highlighted the concept “Dirt is good” (‘Daag aache hai). Surf Excel had started using the tag line Daag aache hai sometime towards the end of 2005 and continues to use it even today in many of its television commercials and promos. Exciting and interesting stories were identified and shortlisted by the show judges - leading director A.R. Murugadoss and actor Suhasini Maniratnam.

Vijay TV says that it has conducted road shows in the selected cities and had hundreds of school children participate in narrating their ideas. Eight of the selected stories told by these kids were converted into ad films by three ad film makers – Roshni Chandra and Socrates
from Primary Colours, Balaji from Reel Root and Sendil from Phoenix Films under guidance from the authors of the stories. LBFM went on air a few weeks ago on the Sunday morning 10 am slot and Vijay TV will be airing the tenth episode and the grand finale of LBFM on April 24 at 10 am.

“Tamil Nadu is an important market; as a matter of fact, it is the largest market for us. This initiative was more for consumer engagement and we may have similar programmes with other channels if the opportunity arises,” explained Surf Excel brand manager Tanveer Khan.

“Our current on-air ‘Daag aache hain’ campaign has been created by our agency Lowe. We may use the eight short films which are about 2 to 2 and a half minutes long each in cinema theatres and selectively on television,” revealed Khan.

The eight selected stories that have been made into ad films are:Happy Birthday Patti” by Abhinaya (a short and sweet film about how a little girl whips up a surprise for her dear grandmother on her birthday); Kitchen Galatta by Evangeline (a fun film about a father and son who decide to surprise the mother with a lunch prepared by them in the kitchen); Anbulla Amma by Vasundhara (an emotional tale of a girl and her prized artwork that she presents to her parents before leaving for boarding school); My new friend by Rahul (a story of how a new boy in the class is bullied in the class and his new classmate comes to his rescue and they become friends; Thaatha’s Treasure by Raja (a story of magic and hidden treasure, little Tejas is out to seek a hidden treasure for his grandmother); Chutti Ponnu by Ziya (a story of little girl Riya, who saves her friend the waiter from an angry customer at her birthday party); Chicken Champion (the writer Arun Balaji has written the chicken story as two boys become friends over a chicken coop); and Muniyamma by Abhay (a tale of a boy who goes out of his way to help a distressed woman on the street).

Vijay TV will be airing the eight ad films during the grand finale and present awards to the children that helped create them. As a part of the festivities, special performances by the contestants of Junior Super Stars - Lakshmi, Alsabeth, Priyanka, Balasarangan, Jayanth and Shanmugapriya and dance performance by Junior Jodis Rinson & Gabriella will be aired during the grand finale.
